I want to build a professional digital video editing computer. What computer components should I buy?

Ideally I would like to buy everything from Tiger Direct.ca however, I’m open to suggestions.

I want to know what computer parts i should buy that are strong enough to edit and output high end HD digital video.

Alright, here is what you want.
You want at least

a medium size tower
a 500W power supply
a AMD processor equal to or faster than 5600+ with 4MB of cache
2GB of RAM
2 DVD drives which can both write (preferably one with blu-ray/dual layer)
a 500GB drive (750GB or 1TB will be very handy if you can afford it).
a kickass (nvidia) graphics card with at least 512MB ram
a kickass soundcard
and then an appropriate motherboard to go with it.

Out of all of this, the single most important thing would be hard drive space. If you want really high tech video editing for a clip bigger than like 5 minutes, hard drive should be the biggest of your budget. I would get two internal hard drives, one for storing data and one to work from because RAM is never enough and most video editing softwares start using your hard drive as temporary RAM and start writing on it. Then I would also get one additional EXTERNAL backup hard drive disk. RAM 4GB would be ideal. AMD 5600+ processor is the least you should get.

AND do not underestimate cooling. With all this, cooling will be your primary concern once you start using the system. There is no point in spending $2000 and then decreasing performance because your components get too hot. Your system may also fail if you keep overheating your computer for extended periods of time repeatedly. And this will happen because if you have 2 hours worth of DVD quality video and you add special effects in it, it will take A LONG TIME to render it. And then when you are burning it, it will just as long again to convert it and then burn it onto a DVD.

You can get two hard drives and/or two video cards and then bridge them together to get the ultimate performance. In addition, I would recommend a backup hard drive too. Any standard motherboard should have USB2.0 and firewire ports on it. I don’t know how big on sound you want to be but if you are not going for dolby digital surround sound, you probably don’t need a seperate sound card. The one built-in on the motherboard should be enough.

In terms of software, adobe premiere is my favorite for video editing. Sony Sound Forge is the best for audio editing. Adobe and Ulead are both awesome for DVD authoring. Nero is is also okay.
